An assessment of crop water productivity in the Indus and Ganges River Basins: current status and scope for improvement AgEcon
Cai, Xueliang; Sharma, Bharat R.; Matin, Mir Abdul; Sharma, Devesh; Gunasinghe, Sarath.
The Indus and Ganges River Basin, being the most populous in the world, is under extreme pressure to sustain food security. Production resources including water are being exploited to various levels from underdevelopment to heavy overexploitation. This report provides a bird’s eye view of the basin and focuses on the nexus between agricultural production and water consumption, making it possible to pinpoint the areas with high/low water productivity and identify the factors behind this, which helps to promote informed decision making in light of environmental sustainability.

Calibration and validation of the aquacrop model for the culture lettuce (lactuca sativa l.) under fertilization levels in pluvial condition CIGR Journal
Amirouche, mawhoub.
The search for decision-making tools is essential in order to control agricultural practices and plan for sustainable agriculture that respects the environment. To this end, FAO has developed an evaluation model called AquaCrop, which covers most technical routes, including fertilization. In this perspective, this study focuses on the AquaCrop model (v6.1) to calibrate it for the simulation of lettuce crop yields (Lactuca sativa L), under different fertilization levels for the trial periods (2015/2016) and (2016/2017). Four levels of fertilization were examined under rain conditions, namely T1 (0 kg N/ha), T2 (60 kg N/ha), T3 (120 kg N/ha) and T4 (180 kg N/ha). The model performance was evaluated using the coefficient of determination (R2), the square root...

Development of deficit irrigation for maize crop under drip irrigation in samaru-nigeria CIGR Journal
Ezekiel, Oiganji.
In the past, outcome of any water management strategy could only be known after field experiment, in recent times, means of evaluating the implications of irrigation schedules without field experiment is fast gaining grounds with the use of models.  This research work present a scenarios studies for different developed irrigation scheduling options for a drip irrigated maize crop at the Institute for Agricultural Research (IAR) irrigation farm Samaru-Nigeria during 2013 and 2014 cropping season using a computer-based model.  Aqua Crop was calibrated and validated with data obtained from the field, it was further used to generate scenario of different irrigation scheduling outcome. Grain and biomass yields, harvest index, seasonal evapotranspiration and...

Livestock and water interactions in mixed crop-livestock farming systems of Sub-Saharan Africa: Interventions for improved productivity AgEcon
Descheemaeker, Katrien; Amede, Tilahun; Haileslassie, Amare.
Focusing on mixed crop-livestock farming systems of sub-Saharan Africa, this review brings together the available knowledge in the various components of the livestock and water sectors. Through an analysis of livestock-water interactions, promising strategies and interventions to improve Livestock Water Productivity are proposed. In the biophysical domain, the numerous interventions relate to feed, water and animal management. These are interlinked with interventions in the socio-political-economic domain. The paper identifies critical research and development gaps in terms of methodologies for quantifying water productivity and integrating different scales, and also in terms of institutions and policies.

Productivity of water in agriculture: Farmers’ perceptions and practices AgEcon
Mahoo, Henry F.; Mkoga, Zakaria Juma; Kasele, Sydney Stephen; Igbadur, Henry E.; Hatibu, Nuhu; Rao, Karuturi P.C.; Lankford, Bruce A..
Stakeholders in agriculture and water related issues have different perceptions about the productivity of water. This is evident by the different definitions of productivity of water, though most of the definitions hinge around the benefits accrued from water use. The viewpoint of smallholder farmers’ regarding the productivity of water is important in order to promote the concept of productivity of water in a country like Tanzania. This is because 95 percent of the farmers are smallholders. This paper presents the farmers’ understanding of the productivity of water in the Mkoji sub-catchment (MSC) in the Ruaha River Basin in Tanzania. It also presents their practices aimed at increasing the productivity of water in the area. It reveals that the concept of...

Temporal Crop Coefficients and Water Productivity of Lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.) Hydroponics In Planthouse CIGR Journal
Muharomah, Riani; Setiawan, Budi Indra; Purwanto, Mohamad Yanuar Jarwadi; Liyantono, Liyantono.
Almost all countries in the world have used lettuce hydroponic cultivation in planthouses because it is appropriate for plant growth and production. The microclimate inside planthouse is an environmental factor that affects plant growth and development. Vegetables planted in the planthouse have a great deal of water requirement. Selecting a method with a more accurate estimation of crop evapotranspiration is a critical factor for efficient water management. In this research, the climates that are affecting the lettuce evapotranspiration with modification of floating hydroponic technique inside the planthouse were investigated. The objectives of this research are to figure out the microclimate, the appropriate model of the potential evapotranspiration, and...

Water Total Factor Productivity Growth of Rice and Corn Crops Using Data Envelopment Analysis – Malmquist Index (West Timor, Indonesia) CIGR Journal
Koehuan, Jonathan; Suharto, Bambang; Djoyowasito, Gunomo; Susanawati, Liliya.
This study aims to estimate staple food water productivity based on crop water use and subsequently aimed to analyze the total factor productivity growth using DEA-MI methods. The secondary panel data from 2000-2015 regarding climate data, main food harvested areas and main food production were applied. The results show that despite higher dependencies on rainwater, staple food production used a small part of the volume. Staple food water productivity showed a fluctuation and positive trends, falling in the range of global estimates but still below the upper value. The single input-single output analysis showed that the mean annual TFP growth of WPPaddy and WPCorn was positive, mainly due to technology change (TEC) rather than the decrease in efficiency...

Yield of ‘Prata-Anã’ banana plants under water deficit and high plant density Rev. Bras. Frutic.
Magalhães,Diogo Barreto; Donato,Sérgio Luiz Rodrigues; Santos,Marcelo Rocha dos; Brito,Cleiton Fernando Barbosa; Fonseca,Varley Andrade; Souza,Bruno Soares de.
Abstract Yield-improving and water-saving techniques assume great importance in the cultivation of banana plants under semiarid regions, prone to greater climate variability. The objective of this study was to evaluate yield and water-use efficiency (WUE) response of ‘Prata-Anã’ banana plants to combinations of plant densities and irrigation levels: three irrigation levels, 50, 75 and 100% crop evapotranspiration (ETc), and four plant densities, 1,666 (3.0 x 2.0 m), 2,083 (3.0 x 1.6 m), 2,666 (3.0 x 1.25 m) and 3,333 (3.0 x 1.0) plants ha-1, evaluated in two production cycles. The treatments were laid out in a randomized block design with four replicates. Increasing plant density up to 3,333 plants ha-1 induced reductions in number of leaves at harvest and...
